Mac Expo Hype

Date January 11, 2005

About twelve hours to go for the Mac faithful as they hang out to hear the keynote address at the Macworld Expo. Rumors so far include a bargain headless mac, flash iPod that only plays random tracks (Life is Random) and iPod/iTunes updates.
I may not be one of the faithful, but if the headless macs are any good, and really low-priced, I could be tempted to take one for a spin, although I would kill for a PowerBook. The flash sounds interesting, but I can see the random-only thing raising a few eybrows, particularly if there is no screen. As always, iPod and iTunes updates will be good, but I doubt if the iPod mini update will unlock a ‘hidden’ 1gig on the harddrive like people have claimed. I’m not a big Mac fanboy, but hopefully there will be some surprises though, Apple seem to be quite good at this kind of thing. Just look how the stirred up a fuss about the ‘Shuffle Songs’ option on the iPods. Now that is smooth marketing, even though a lot of it is preaching to the choir (who happen to sing very loudly).

I wonder if having no screen will suck?

I think the no screen aspect won’t be too bad, particularly if it’s on shuffle.
It seems to be designed to pick up and go; kind of put it in your pocket (or on the lanyard) and forget about it while it mixes your music.
The only difficulty I can see is when you want to go to a specific track. The lack of scroll wheel means that you will have to click past songs individually and no screen means you have to keep listening to the start of each track, even in non-shuffle mode. Given that it holds up to 240 tracks, that could be a real pain. Still, I might have to track one down and have a play, but I don’t think I will be purchasing. The mini-mac on the other hand…
