The Joy Before Thinking
June 1, 2005
Just got home from a play, The Joy Before Thinking, that was produced by someone I work with. And it was really good. The producer’s friend was the writer/director and I wasn’t quite sure what to think before I went in. According to the blurb:
The Joy Before Thinking is a magical realist nosedive into the world as it might be in a society of ever-increasing surveillance and fear. The story of the diappearance of all the children under the age of seven in Australia weaves humour and irony, with the horror of an unknown force that threatens to rob us of an entire generation, and more importantly, of course, our Australian way of life
The performances were great, particularly that of the lead, Zoë Stark, and it managed to tread the line between abstract and blatant that so many small productions make a mess of. The show was put on by Sophere Theatre at the Mechanics Institute Performing Arts Centre in Brunswick. It will be on until the 5th of June, so if you get the chance, go take a look.
