The TPN attitude to advertising/marketing
November 4, 2005
I like what The Podcast Network are doing. First up, thier deal with Motorola is great. Big company, new ROKR iTunes phone they need to promote etc. But now they’ve done even better. I don’t know if it’s a sponsorship or not, but Mick and Cam have teamed up with Azure Wireless to provide cheap, wireless access to TPN content. The plans are $10 for 150MB and $20 for 400MB. While this would be great for people syncing iPods to laptops while on the go, it would really shine for WiFi enabled players, such as a PDA or high end phone.
For example, they have a hotspot at Melbourne Central, where I walk through on the way to work. With a WiFi PDA, I could update my TPN shows as I wandered through to the tram or while I was waiting for a coffee. $20 for 200MB seems like a pretty good deal. It’s limited to TPN access, but Azure have a whole range of other price points for full net access.
This is a great way to promote both players, as well as being an ingenious way to access TPN content. I only hope that they can launch a similar deal in the States, where the uptake of hotspots is more marked than Australia. These guys deserve to be getting a bigger wrap for what they are up to.

Oh, and congrats to Ewan on the BAFTA nomination, too!
