Krispy Kreme Krush

Date March 2, 2006

The power food has over people. Earlier, I posted about the 10,000 free doughnuts that were to be given away by Krispy Kreme at Melbourne’s QV. Well, today a few of us cut work and went for a wander down to check out the commotion. It was an absolute packout.

The tent they were working out of was in a corner of the QV square. The line we joined started there, went across the square, down the laneway onto Swanston Street, along the footpath and had started curling around down Lonsdale Street. And this was only our line. I think the most amusing part of it was the sheepish grin on everybody’s face as each one realised they were lining up for a city block to get a single, free, glazed doughnut. We bailed after half an hour before actually entering the QV precinct, but managed to take a couple of photos on my phone.

All this for a doughnut chain that isn’t even opening in Melbourne for another four months. Even then, it’ll be out in bloody Fountain Gate!

The first photo is of the lines meeting in the square, with the tent in the top left and the other queue snaking down the lane to the top right. The second shot is of the queue we were in down the laneway between the square and the street. This represents no more than about a sixth of that line. Click on each for the full-sized shot.
