Dead tree yearning

Date June 5, 2006

It’s been ages since I’ve finished reading a dead-tree book. I’ve simply run out of time these days to sit back and enjoy reading something. I’ve read a couple of Cory Doctorow’s books on my phone while on the train and I’ve got a pile of Murakami and other random books half-read next to my bed, but I can’t seem to get around to putting in the effort to finish them. My reading time these days seems to consist mainly of blogs and news sites, while on the train it is difficult to listen to podcasts while reading anything more engrossing than the fluff they put in the MX. I even had to find time to sit down with a magazine the other day so I didn’t waste my money.

The problem is that I miss reading a good book. There’s a certain satisfaction in buying a book and reading it cover to cover. I’m one of those book fetishists who enjoy the holding and the page turning and believe that this is why electronic paper and e-books are still miles off competing for people’s eyes. But these days, after spending far too much time at work, catching the train home and attempting to feed myself, there’s not enough time left to devote to reading other than the quick fix I get via Bloglines or some gentle Googling.

I am hereby resolving to finish at least one real-life book this month. It’s not going to be War and Peace (which I’ve almost hit the halfway point of after you don’t want to know how long) but it will be something worth reading.
