Helen Coonan at it again
July 7, 2006
Same stupid people, same stupid, dangerous and impractical ideas:
Internet legislation the Federal Government intends to introduce later this year was found to be impractical and effectively impossible only two years ago.Communications Minister Helen Coonan wants to introduce legislation that would regulate streaming technologies such as third-generation (3G) mobile phones and subscription-based internet portals “to provide safeguards comparable to those in place for traditional media”.
…The chief executive of online service company NetRegistry, Larry Bloch, said governments across the world were struggling to keep up with fast-moving technology moving out of their regulator’s reach, and the Federal Government’s response to the Big Brother furore was not credible.
“This stunt is really their reaction to one particular incident,” Mr Bloch said. “Some of it is definitely for show.”
Coming soon, Coonan’s bid to monitor and censor nasty thoughts and bad smells. God help us if she ever decides to do something serious.
