Melbourne’s public transport nightmare
February 1, 2007
The state of Melbourne’s public transport system, the trains in particular, is fast going down the drain. Already, 37 trains have been pulled out of services and it looks like the rest of the batch of 70-odd Siemens trains will also be pulled. This would force Connex, who runs the system, to implement a Saturday timetable all week long, just as school and uni starts again for the year.
Pulling the trains is clearly the right thing to do, as the brakes don’t work on them and this obviously has safety issues, but already commuters have been complaining about the lack of services, late and canceled trains and severe overcrowding on those that do run. Connex need to sort out the trains with the supplier, demand compensation and drastically improve their operations in order to win back a mediocum of trust from the Melbourne public.
For those who have had enough, it sounds like a day of protest on March 1 will be taking place with people advised not to buy or validate tickets on that day to send a message that the quality of service simply is not good enough. I’ve had more than enough myself and will happily be participating.

public transport is extremely slow, unreliable, inefficient, some suburbs even do not have it at all, unsafe, and travelling by train have caused trauma and stress to commuters as they travel one hour at least. In future with the increased oil prices and aging of population this people will have to stay at their home as they do not have public transport. At the moment it takes approximately one hour from Werribee to CBD or more than an hour from Frankston.
